Case Studies


CP Sport is a registered charity that provides sporting opportunities to individuals of all ages and at all levels from the recreational right through to Paralympics’ competition.

A founder member of the British Paralympics’ Association and a member of CP ISRA, it is also an advisory agency for disability sport issues and is recognised and respected within the international arena.

Since 2001 Cerebral Palsy Sport’s primary aim is to attract more people to become involved in sporting activities for the pursuit of excellence or for fun and enjoyment. Through their activities with CP Sport, members grow in confidence and build life-long friendships as they compete and socialise with others who share the same difficulties as themselves in an environment where they are no longer made to feel different from their peers.

In addition to sports provision, CP Sport has a training and educational arm offering specialist advice with a focus on increasing the skills and knowledge of individuals who support children with cerebral palsy.

CP Sport works with a network of dedicated volunteers across a variety of sports, and co-ordinates programmes of activity from regional levels through to world class sporting opportunities.

The Challenge

Athena’s initial challenge was to review current training needs within CP Sport as their training programme had not been reviewed for a number of years and needed updating.

Staff awareness of safeguarding needed to be prioritised and CP Sport wanted to embed safer practices and safer culture through training with all levels of staff e.g. administration staff, Chief Executive and Directors.

Athena was asked to plan a new safeguarding training course which would reflect the needs of all staff.  CP Sport wanted Athena to design and deliver training that was bespoke, real and focused on safer cultures using interactive exercises to ensure the training would be ‘creative’ and fun and the learning permanent.

The Athena Solution

Athena believes in working with CP Sport based on a partnership approach.

This included thorough preparation and understanding of CP Sport projects and internal systems to ensure any training met current standards and practices.

We designed a training programme that included a variety of learning approaches which were participative, inclusive and interactive. There were opportunities for discussion, individual and group activities, critical reflection. The format also included a solution focused approach for outcome focused planning and delivered in a creative manner.

Using Athena’s wealth of training resources, we designed a bespoke trainer’s script detailing the needed training resources, materials, training exercises or activities, learning outcomes and timings.  An accompanying ‘power point’ presentation was designed to include the most recent Serious Case Reviews and lessons learned in Safeguarding.

Clear and concise handouts were prepared which recapped the main themes of the programme. They also included links which sign-posted participants to internet or intranet support.

The Outcome

An up-to-date, interactive and fun training course was created that fitted the requirements of CP Sport. The work was completed in an organised, friendly and timely way which resulted in increased confidence and awareness levels for the CP Sport coaches, Chief Executive and Directors.

The use of real life case studies and investigations brought reality and credibility to the training programme to demonstrate that the staff at CP Sport are in key positions to identify safeguarding concerns.
