The Challenge

The school business manager approached Fusion Business Solutions based upon an excellent reputation. The purpose was to embed a framework for safer recruitment training for the senior leadership team. The aim was to provide valuable information for safer school culture, advice and guidance to strengthen safeguards against employing unsuitable people in the school. They wanted to demonstrate they have effective recruitment and section processes in place that ensure learners are both well taught and protected and can be demonstrated to Ofsted.

The Athena Solution

Fusion Business Solutions and The Athena Programme partnership was born bringing the essence of safer recruitment alive…safeguarding child protection and human resources process woven together as one fundamental approach. We together wrote and designed a bespoke safer recruitment training programme for the senior leadership team over four hours over two sessions. This training covered safeguarding key legislation and guidance; serious case reviews that changed safeguarding in schools; working with children; and the recruitment process (Planning, information to and from applicants, references, screening applications, short listing, interviewing, assessments and risk assessments).

The course also provided an Ofsted self evaluation tool kit; safer practice guidance; home work activities and recruitment templates.

The Outcome

Jo Priestley – Operations Manager at Dixons Allerton Academy said “We wanted to extend safer recruitment training to all our leadership team, faculty leaders and associate managers to increase the safeguards in place when recruiting new staff. We needed training which offered all the knowledge and skills covered in the recommended training from Department for Education but which suited our timetable and linked with our own policy and procedure.  The training offered by Fusion and The Athena Proramme was tailored to ensure our needs could be met over two half day sessions. Our wider leadership team had the opportunity to not only find out more about safer recruitment practice and recent updates in law but work together on designing recruitment documentation, consider mock scenarios and get a real flavour of the potential hazards in recruitment and more importantly how to avoid them. Handouts for staff were useful and there was even homework to link the two sessions together and ensure learning was continuous. The training was powerful, enjoyable and completely met all expectations.”
