Learning Outcomes –Designated Safeguarding Officer (DSO) Training

This course will help you become familiar with the role and responsibilities of the Designated Person/Safeguarding Lead for safeguarding and understand the child abuse investigation process using the  Children Act(s) from strategy meetings; case conferencing and  protection plans.

  • To understand the roles and responsibilities of the DSO for safeguarding children,  young people and Adults at Risk
  • Explore the roles and responsibilities of other Safeguarding partners.
  • Understand how to respond to those subject of concerns or allegations of abuse
  • How to manage / support staff through the process of allegations/and or disclosures
  • Understand and explore in-depth your organisations safeguarding policies and procedures
  • Understand and commit to a safer culture and a risk management culture.
  • Contributing to Legal and Audit Processes
  • Assessing and Managing risks
  • Have an awareness of the emotional dimensions of safeguarding work for you, your workforce
  • Safer working practices with children and adults at risk
  • Understand how your own values and beliefs can affect your role and responsibilities as a DSO
  • Identify and understand barriers to reporting
  • To explore the difficult decisions to be made and the people they need to be made with
  • Understand the challenges and barriers to effective information sharing within the group.
  • Understand the Child Protection Process (Working Together 2015) and Joint investigation process and roles / responsibilities of professionals involved (Section 17 & section 47)
  • Understand the investigation process from alert to referral, planning meeting and protection plan (Section 42 Enquiry-  Adults at Risk)
  • Demonstrate an awareness of the main principles of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 -  Best interest principle
  • Understand the requirements of the Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards.
  • Understand how other Safeguarding Arrangements impact on Safeguarding, i.e. MARAC, MAPPA, Prevent Duty, FGM Duty etc.
