Signs of Safety

The Signs of Safety was first created in West Australia by Andrew Turnell and Steve Edwards working together with over 150 frontline practitioners during the 1990’s. Although the Signs of Safety approach can be used by individual practitioners and teams, the most effective use of the approach occurs through system-wide implementation. It’s background is set from solution focused brief therapy and works on learning from what works well and looking at examples of good engagement. We take Signs of Safety and turn it into more than book…taking each page of the process and make it a live so you experience, feel and then can do…The main themes focus upon:

  • Partnership with parents/carers
  • Collaboration between agencies
  • Designed to be used with young people and their families
  • Focuses on the key current issues
  • Highlights what is already working well
  • Can trigger immediate progress
  • Developed from practice
  • Creating planning through goal setting
  • Comprehensive, participatory child protection risk assessment
  • Participatory safety-planning in situations of serious child abuse
  • Solution-focused brief therapy particular its use with families and in situations of abuse and trauma.
