Parental Substance Misuse

Parental Substance Misuse is increasingly being seen as a contributory factor in cases of serious harm to children and young people.  You will explore some of the myths of substance use and improve your skills to enable effective child protection work in this complex area.

Benefits

You will be able to recognise the effects of drugs and/or alcohol on parenting capacity and the effect this has on children, identify children at risk, recognise that some parents will administer drugs to their children and the consequences of this, assess within a multi agency framework the risk to children whose parents misuse drugs and alcohol, and gain an increased awareness of the various services in place to assist in supporting families, parents and children.

This course is suitable for you if you work with families where there are substance misuse issues and will be of particular interest to probation workers, police officers, substance misuse workers, domestic abuse workers, family centre workers and NHS staff.  You do not have to have prior knowledge of safeguarding to take part in this course.
